Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri insists Chelsea must improve defensively.
Chelsea were solid at the back in the 4-0 win at Burnley last weekend but were poor defensively in the 3-2 Carabao Cup win over Derby County at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
Chelsea legend and assistant manager Gianfranco Zola criticised the performances of Gary Cahill and Andreas Christensen after the game.
Asked if Chelsea’s defence has been sorted out ahead of the game against Crystal Palace, Sarri said: “No, no.
“In the last match against Derby they played a very good match. I think we played well in the offensive phase, many mistakes in the defensive phase.
“It is clear that we have to improve in the defensive phase. I am used in the first months to have problems like this.
“At Burnley I saw a very good performance defensively and three days after I saw a lot of mistakes. It means we are not a solid team at the moment with continuity, it is dangerous.”
Gary Cahill wore the armband in the victory over Derby on Wednesday and Sarri has now confirmed Cahill will be Chelsea’s permanent captain this season.
“As we have seen in the last matches, the captain is Cahill, like in the last match,” Sarri added.
“When he isn’t on the pitch our captain is Azpilicueta. Our captain is Cahill.”
