Chelsea full-back Davide Zappacosta has a Premier League record he won’t be proud.
The 26-year-old Italian has the unenviable new record of being the Premier League’s biggest benchwarmer so far this season. No outfield player has spent more time on the bench than the Italian waiting to be called on.
Zappacosta has been on the bench for every Chelsea league game this season and has only been called upon just once, coming on in the 84th minute at home to Cardiff on September 15.
No outfield player in the Premier League has spent more time on the bench than Zappacosta this season with the Italian been on the bench for a combined total of 1,164 league minutes.
Only nine other players have spent more time on the bench than the 26-year-old, all of whom are sub goalies.
Christian Fuchs has spent the next longest amount of time on the bench for an outfield player – 1,080 minutes.
He’s followed by Jermain Defoe [1,059 minutes], Daniel Sturridge [1,038 minutes], Leon Balogun [1,010 minutes] and Phil Foden [995 minutes].
It’s difficult to see this changing for Zappacosta with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri mostly calling upon Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley, Pedro and Fabregas from the bench.
Despite failing to start any Premier League game for Chelsea this season, Zappacosta has started every Europa League game.
