N’Golo Kante scored his third Premier League goal of the season at Selhurst Park as Chelsea ended Crystal Palace’s three-match unbeaten run to move five points clear of fifth-place Arsenal.

David Luiz played the ball over the top for Kante, who got behind Patrick van Aanholt, calmly controlled the ball with his chest before sending the ball rolling past Crystal Palace goalkeeper Guaita.

According to Kante, the move is something he has tried several times in training and was happy it worked against Crystal Palace. He also praised the pass from Luiz.

Kante told Sky Sports: “It is a move I have tried in training.

It doesn’t work many times but David (Luiz) gave me a good ball and I am happy to score with my left foot and help the team win. It was all about the pass.”

Luiz, who provided the assist for the goal, also revealed the secret to Kante’s goal.

Following the win, Luiz told Sky Sports: “It is never easy to play here or control it here especially when they play long balls but we did well.

“We could have scored early but they also did a great match defensively which is why it was so difficult.

“[The goal was about] the connection, about training every day and understanding the philosophy.

“I just tried to put the ball in and time it for his run.”

This is the first time Kante is scoring three league goals in a season and Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri would definitely feel his decision to play Kante in an advanced position is paying off.

“I think he has to think to defend first of all. He is improving, especially in his movement without the ball. Today the movement was really very good and done with the right timing,” Sarri said of Kante.

“It’s very important for us when we have to play against opponents very low, where the strikers and wingers find it hard to find space. It’s about the movement of the midfielders.

“We have to work on Loftus and Barkley on this. Loftus, especially, is a very great player with the ball, but he can improve a lot in his movement without the ball.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp hailed David Luiz for his assist for Kante’s goal against Crystal Palace.

“The pass, we’re talking about a pass from a centre-back,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

“I know David Luiz has got great quality, but he clips it and it’s such great technique.

“He just stands it up there and puts it on his chest. It’s perfect.

“He’s got brilliant ability but he sees it so early.

“He gets it back onto his right foot and he goes ‘there you are’.

“It has to be the right weight, has to be the right height otherwise it won’t get there.

“It’s a brilliant pass.”
