After criticisms for his performance in Chelsea’s 3-1 loss at Tottenham last month, Chelsea defender David Luiz was solid as Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday at Stamford Bridge to end City’s unbeaten start to the season.
Luiz scored from a corner in the second half after N’Golo Kante’s goal in the first half.
Chelsea risk losing David Luiz because of the club’s over-30s policy on new contracts. Chelsea are only willing to offer players over 30 one-year deals.
Luiz, 31, will be a free agent at the end of the season and reportedly wants a longer contract offer from Chelsea.
With Chelsea only prepared to give him a one-year contract because of his age, Luiz might be forced to leave the club at the end of the season despite enjoying playing for Chelsea.
Following Chelsea’s win over Manchester City, Luiz admitted he’s in talks with Chelsea over a new contract but refused to give assurances on accepting Chelsea’s offer a new one-year deal.
Quizzed about his future following his performance against Manchester City, Luiz said: “I am just trying to enjoy myself, like I do every single day. Then, for sure, we will do the best thing for me, for Chelsea, for everybody.”
Asked whether or not he would accept a one-year extension, Luiz replied: “We are still talking, let’s see. Let’s see what the future brings. I love this club, everybody knows I want to stay.”
