Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend to end City’s unbeaten start to the season in the Premier League.
The win against City increased Chelsea’s hopes of getting back into the title as we enter midway through the season.
Up next for Chelsea is an away clash against Brighton at the Amex Stadium, and Maurizio Sarri’s side can’t afford to drop points in this game.
Chris Hughton’s men are a tough nut to crack at home and have taken points off Manchester United (twice) and Arsenal this year on their own field.
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has now backed Chelsea to beat Brighton on Sunday, or else the win against Manchester City was just in vain.
“I’ve got to go Chelsea here,” he told Sky Sports. “I like Brighton at home, they’re strong at the Amex, but I think Chelsea have to back up that huge win against City.
“Last week we were looking at Chelsea and thinking: ‘If they get beat by City, are they going to make the top four?’
“They go and beat Man City, and all of a sudden they have to back that up. If they don’t, the Man City game was a complete and utter waste of time.
“This is how Maurizio Sarri will be looking at it.
“He’ll be thinking: ‘Can my players do this again in a completely different setting?’
“They failed miserably at Wolves, which may have thrown them out of the title race, so this is a big test. It’s about attitude.”
