Chelsea needed a win against Newcastle United to keep up pace with Tottenham who play Manchester United this weekend and increase the gap between Arsenal to six points.

It was looking like a good day for Chelsea when Pedro scored the opener ten minutes into the game, but the game took a different turn with Rafa Benitez’s men matched Chelsea toe to toe and ended up levelling the scores five minutes before half-time.

Chelsea ended up getting the victory as Willian scored the winner in the second-half to give Chelsea a deserved victory after an improved second-half performance.

“I’m really very happy with the result,” he said. “I was happy with the performance at Tottenham, today we started well for 10 minutes but after the goal we thought it was easy and it wasn’t. We slept for 25 minutes and we were in trouble.

“It was better in the second half but we need to improve in the mental reaction because after the first goal something happened. We stopped playing. It was very important to get three points, and to score, and for now that’s enough.”

Speaking about Chelsea’s loss in concentration that made Newcastle enter the game, Sarri said: “I’m really very happy with the result.

Chelsea have found it difficult to come back and win games, and the Blues seemed to be in trouble sometimes after conceding despite taking the lead, and Sarri insists that the players’ mentality must improve.

Sarri said “No, no. We were not able to react in the right way to the difficulty. Today wasn’t a difficulty. We scored after nine minutes, so we had not to face difficulty.

“But in the last match, for the first time in Watford, we reacted very well to the 1-1, after the goal in the last minute of the first half. I think, apart from the result, we reacted really very well in the last match with Tottenham. Today we had only to manage a positive situation.

“I think we need to improve our mentality. Our mentality global, I think.”
