David Luiz’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Chelsea’s policy of offering just one-year contracts to players over 30 has affected negotiations between Luiz and Chelsea.
Luiz wants a longer term contract.
According to the agent of defender, Kia Joorabchian, Luiz wants to remain at Chelsea. Joorabchian believes Luiz and Chelsea would work something out.
Luiz has established himself as first-choice in Maurizio Sarri’s two-man defence after falling out of favour under former boss Antonio Conte.
He has already played in 21 Premier League games under new boss Maurizio Sarri this season compared to just 10 league games under Conte last season.
Joorabchian told The Sun: “Contrary to some reports we are in a very amicable situation with Chelsea.
“We are trying to work out a deal for David Luiz because he wants to stay, the manager wants him to stay and so does the club.
“I’m sure something will be worked out.”
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri revealed last month that he wanted David Luiz to remain at the club beyond this season.
“The deal is very difficult for this reason, I think,” Sarri said. “Because the club wants a short contract, and the players want a long contract. So it’s difficult for this reason.
“But I think, at the end, we can find a solution. I know very well that it is not easy but I think that we can do a new deal for both. They are very important players for us.
“It’s very difficult to find a centre back for this level, and it’s very difficult to find a central midfielder technically like Fabregas. And so I think they have to stay with us.”
It isn’t just Sarri that wants Luiz to remain at Chelsea. Chelsea winger Willian also revealed early this month that he wanted David Luiz to remain at Chelsea beyond this season.
Following Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace early this month, a game in which Luiz provided a superb assist for N’Golo Kante’s winner, Willian revealed he wants Luiz to stay at Chelsea due to the quality the centre-back possesses.
“For sure, of course,” Willian said when asked if he wanted David Luiz to stay at Chelsea beyond this season.
“I want. We have to see if they club will want him. I think they want. For me, I want him to stay. David has a lot of quality to do these kind of passes. This wasn’t the first time he has done it. He tried a lot a couple of games ago. This time he had success and we scored a goal.”
