Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri reportedly wants to make big changes to the squad with the players struggling to adapt to his methods.
According to Daily Mirror, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta could face the axe under Maurizio Sarri with the Italian keen on signing Napoli right-back Elseid Hysaj.
Sarri has told the board to sign Elseid Hysaj once Gonzalo Higuain arrives at the club. The loan move for Higuain, 31, could be completed by midday on Wednesday so he will be eligible to face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.
Sarri criticised his players following the 2-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal at the weekend and risk alienating his squad even more by dropping Azpilicueta, who has been regular captain this season.
Chelsea have stuttered after a near-perfect start under Sarri and the Italian is keen on bringing in players he can trust.
Hysaj played under Sarri at Empoli and Napoli and the Italian wants to reunite with the right-back at Chelsea as he seeks for players who understand his methods.
Hysaj has dropped down the pecking order at Napoli with Carlo Ancelotti favouring both Nikola Maksimovic and Kevin Malcuit so Chelsea should have no issues convincing Napoli to let the player leave.
Chelsea are interested in a loan deal for 24-year-old right-back, but Napoli would prefer to sell him permanently for a fee of around £45million.
With Victor Moses and Davide Zappacosta set to leave Stamford Bridge this month, Sarri is hoping Chelsea complete a deal for Hysaj quickly.
Hysaj’s agent Mario Giuffredi warned Chelsea earlier this month that the right-back would sign a new deal at Napoli if the Blues don’t make a move for him this month.
“The important thing is hearing that Ancelotti respects Hysaj,” Giuffredi said.
“He confirmed his faith in him. Of course, the January transfer window is always to be evaluated and there has been talk of Chelsea, for example.
“If there are situations that are mutually advantageous, then we’d evaluate them.
“If nothing happens in January, then we’ll discuss a contract extension.”
Hysaj’s current contract runs until June 2021 and he has been with Napoli since moving from Empoli in 2015.
Meanwhile, Eden Hazard recently admitted he is frustrating Sarri and revealed the Italian expects more from him.
“I’ve frustrated all my managers and now I’m still frustrating Sarri,” Hazard said.
“I frustrated (Jose) Mourinho. They think I need to score more, do more of this or that. And the next coach, I’ll frustrate him too.”
