Eden Hazard’s future at Chelsea is one of the most talked about news in football, and the Belgian has made it clear that he will reveal his future only at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old has 18 months left on his contract but has stalled on signing a new Chelsea contract despite confirming that he and his family are happy in London.
According to Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur, Hazard has rejected two contract offers from Chelsea because he is waiting for Real Madrid to make a move to sign him.
However, former Liverpool ace Steve Nicol, who was speaking as a pundit on the ESPN FC podcast believes that the signing of Gonzalo Higuain might convince Hazard to remain at the club.
Higuain has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea this January, and reports suggest that despite the technicalities involved in the deal, the 31-year-old might make the move to Stamford Bridge before the close of the January transfer window.
Nicol said: “If you’ve got the money you spend it!
“It’s not much of a gamble.
“The guy at Chelsea will score goals.
“The majority of the games Chelsea play, they spend the majority of the time up in the opposition’s defensive third.
“That guy is going to score goals, there’s absolutely no question.”
With Chelsea strikers Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud unable to perform on a consistent basis, Hazard has been used as false nine by Maurizio Sarri, a role the Belgian has admitted he doesn’t like. And Nicol believes whether Hazard goes or stays, Higuain will be a good signing for the club.
Nicol continued: “The other thing is what are you going to do with somebody like Hazard?
“If Hazard hasn’t made his mind up to move, if Hazard sees Higuain coming in, does that change his mind moving?
“And if it makes no difference to Hazard and he does go, then guess what?
“You’ve still got Higuain, you’ve still got a guy who scores goals.
“And there are not many guys who score goals available, so if you’ve got the money, you spend it!”
