Both Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri and club captain Cesar Azpilicueta have apologised to the fans for the heavy defeat suffered in Manchester as City defeated the Blues 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening.

Chelsea were poor in that game, as Pep Guardiola’s men overran Chelsea’s midfield and the Blues couldn’t produce a response.

Within the first 25 minutes of the game, Chelsea were already 4-0 down and the travelling Blues fans couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Many of the fans made it away from the stadium at half-time as City scored two extra goals in the second-half to further embarrass Chelsea.

The loss is the worst Chelsea have suffered in the Premier League, and Sarri apologised afterwards.

“In the last three matches away we’ve played very badly so we need to say sorry,” said the manager.

Azpilicueta also revealed that it was the worst night of his career as he couldn’t believe the scoreline at the end of the game.

Azpilicueta added: “It is one of the worst nights in my career, it is difficult to explain what happened.

“We are conceding a lot of goals and we cannot accept that. All I can do is apologise to the fans because it is not acceptable.”

Sarri’s job now seems to be under threat with bookmakers predicting that the Italian will be the next Premier League manager to face the sack.

Sarri admitted after the humiliating loss to Manchester City that he was under pressure.

Asked whether the result will put pressure on his job, Sarri said: “I think that’s right. I am in charge of the team so it’s right.

“I don’t know, not at the moment, but I think that will happen because it’s normal.

“Something we need to do, we have to do. I don’t know, you’ll have to ask the club. I have no idea about this at the moment.”
