Chelsea welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night, a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final between both sides which Chelsea won 1-0.
Jose Mourinho was manager of United in last season’s FA Cup between both sides while Antonio Conte was Chelsea’s manager but both managers have now been sacked by their respective clubs.
Chelsea come into the game against Manchester United fresh from beating Malmo in the Europa League 2-1 and losing 6-0 to Manchester City last weekend while Manchester United lost 2-0 to PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday, their first loss under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who replaced Mourinho in December.
Former Premier League striker Michael Owen is predicting a 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Manchester United on Monday.
“It has not been a great couple of days for either team with Chelsea hit for six by Manchester City on Sunday before United were brought back down to earth with a bang against PSG in the Champions League 1st leg earlier in the week,” Owen told BetVictor.
“The game is a repeat, of course, of last season’s final which Chelsea won 1-0 and the Blues have actually beaten United on the last four occasions they have met in the competition.
“Both clubs have a rich history in the competition and Chelsea are looking to reach the last eight for the fourth season in a row – United are looking to reach the quarterfinals for the 5th season on the spin.
“United have only won two of their last 22 away games at Chelsea in all competitions, but I feel the game will go to extra-time and possibly penalties before we find a winner.”
While Owen is predicting a 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Manchester United, Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to beat Manchester United.
According to Merson, Chelsea will beat Manchester United 2-1.
“United were brought back down to earth by Paris Saint-Germain the other day. It’s a hard game. Its one of those where I think Chelsea will win this. I think that Champions League loss will knock Man Utd sideways,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“They will miss Jesse Lingard, he’s a bit of an unsung hero for them. When he went off against PSG that was it then. The players that are coming in like Alexis Sanchez have flopped.
“It’s a massive game for both of them. Man Utd are now are under pressure after their first-leg loss to PSG in the Champions League. Their season could go up in flames in a week because if they get beat here they are out of the FA Cup and are facing an uphill task to stay in the Champions League. This period for me is when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to get the job or not.”
Even though both have disagreed on who will win the game, they have both agreed on one thing – Chelsea and Manchester United will concede goals.
Chelsea have failed to keep a clean sheet in three of our last four games in all competitions while Manchester United have failed to keep a clean sheet in two of their last four games.
