Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been played higher up the pitch this season under Maurizio Sarri.
Kante won the PFA Player of the Year in Chelsea’s title winning season under Antonio Conte playing as a defensive midfielder so Sarri’s decision to play him further up the pitch came as a shock to many.
One of Sarri’s reason for playing a ball-winning midfielder like Kante high up the pitch is to enable the team win the ball high up. Sarri wants Chelsea to spend more time in the opposition half and one way of achieving that is by winning the ball high up.
While many aren’t still convinced Kante should be playing high, the midfielder is quietly adjusting to his new role in the Chelsea team under Sarri.
Sarri wants Kante to win the balls high up and the midfielder has been doing just that for Chelsea this season. According to a stat by Whoscored.com, no player has won possession in the attacking third more times than N’golo Kante (22) in the Premier League this season. This stat would definitely excite Sarri as this is what he expects from Kante.
Kante hasn’t just been winning balls high up the pitch for Chelsea this season. The 27-year-old midfielder has scored three goals for Chelsea in the Premier League this season. He scored just once in the league last season and once in his first season at Chelsea.
Kante has four assists in the Premier League already this season compared to two assists in his first two seasons at Chelsea.
