There have been calls for Maurizio Sarri to give a chance to youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi, but the Chelsea boss has often preferred to play experienced stars Willian, Eden Hazard and Pedro ahead of the teenager.

Hudson-Odoi was given a rare start in the Europa League clash against Malmo for the Europa League second leg clash at Stamford Bridge.

Hudson-Odoi was one of Chelsea’s best players on the night and capped off a good night by scoring a brilliant goal much to the delight of the Chelsea fans.

Sarri revealed he was pleased with his performance after the game, but still insisted that it’ll be impossible for him to play regularly because of the presence of Willian and Pedro.

Sarri said in his press conference: “He played very well but I also think Christensen and Emerson played very well so I’m very happy with those three players. At the moment they are ready to play with consistency.

“You need to understand in the same position we have Pedro, Willian and Hazard, so it’s not easy for a young player to play with consistency like his team mates. I want to remind you Callum has played 14 matches [this season]. We are using him in the right way. Twenty matches will become 30 next year, and then 40 the year after.

“But the club has to decide because if I want Callum on the pitch with consistency then I have to sell another winger, otherwise the club is in trouble.”

Another Chelsea academy product Ruben Loftus-Cheek was on the pitch but as a second-half substitute after just recovering from yet another injury.

Sarri said: “We had a lot of problems with Loftus-Cheek in the last few months. He started training only two days ago after a long period of big problems with his back. I think that he can improve a lot, Callum of course because he is 18 so he can improve a lot.

“We needed to find the right position on the pitch for Ampadu. We are trying him as a midfielder, centre back, full back, but we need to have a clear idea because from now until the end of the season we must decide, otherwise for him it’s difficult to improve.”

When asked particularly on Hudson-Odoi’s performance, Sarri revealed he was also pleased with his performance and the performance of Andreas Christensen and Palmieri Emerson.

He said: “He played very well, but also Christensen, Emerson played very well, so I am very happy with these three players. I think that they are ready to play with consistency.”
