Many Chelsea fans have called for Cesar Azpilicueta to be stripped of the captain’s armband following his role in the Kepa Arrizabalaga debacle in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat against Man City.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri wanted to substitute Kepa for Willy Caballero but the ex-Athletic Bilbao man refused to come off.
Azpilicueta did nothing during the whole incident and even told Sky Sports after the match that he wasn’t aware Kepa refused to go off as he was on the other side of the pitch. This is certainly not the behavior expected from a Chelsea captain and fans have now called for him to be stripped of the captaincy. Antonio Rudiger’s brother has also called for the right-back to be dropped as Chelsea captain.
Former Chelsea captain and legend John Terry wouldn’t have tolerated Kepa’s behavior if he was still at the club and he would have dragged the goalkeeper off the pitch whether he likes it or not. Terry was a no-nonsense captain during his playing days.
The Chelsea team that Terry captained had lots of leaders like Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack, Petr Cech etc and that is something this present Chelsea team lacks.
While Azpilicueta showed he isn’t captain material in the game against Manchester City, Eden Hazard showed he has what it takes to be captain of the team.
After Raheem Sterling scored the winning penalty for Manchester City, Hazard put his hands on his head and then walked over to console his teammates. Antonio Rudiger had to pick Azpilicueta up from the ground as Hazard made his way to the captain.
Hazard then headed over to referee Jon Moss and the other officials before finally patting Kepa on the head as he walked back to the halfway line.
Hazard’s conduct after the loss to Manchester City have gone down well with lots of Chelsea fans with many now calling for him to replace Azpilicueta as captain.
