Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has hailed Chelsea defender David Luiz as the best ball-playing centre back in the Premier League.
Luiz has been a regular for Chelsea this season with the Brazilian starting 26 of Chelsea’s 28 Premier League matches.
Luiz has had his critics over the years during his two spells at Chelsea but Hargreaves insists no other centre back in the Premier League passes the ball better than Luiz.
Despite admitting that Luiz does have his defensive deficiencies, Hargreaves believes the Brazilian suits Sarri’s style of play.
“He’s perfect for Maurizio Sarri,” Hargreaves said.
“He’s probably the best passer of the ball in the centre-back position in the whole Premier League, that’s what he gives you.
“For a team that dominates possession, he’s perfect.
“I think the issue we’ve had at times in his career I think has been defensively.
“This is a game against Tottenham where he was terrific.
“When he plays like this he’s perfect as a centre-back.
“Defensively he can be very good, he makes good decisions.
“Passing the ball he’s exceptional.
“It’s just at times he’s giving away so many moments in games that have made people question him.”
Meanwhile, Owen Hargreaves believes Callum Hudson-Odoi is a better player than £60million Christian Pulisic.
Chelsea signed Pulisic from Dortmund in January but he stayed back on loan at Dortmund until the rest of the season.
“I love him (Hudson-Odoi). He’s 18-years-old and every time he plays he impacts the game,” Hargreaves added.
“But they have just spent £50m, £60m on Pulisic. There is no way he is a better player than Hudson-Odoi, not in a million years.”
Former Chelsea boss Glenn Hoddle insists Hudson-Odoi needs to play more games if he is to reach his potential while also claiming that Ruben Loftus-Cheek deserves to start more matches.
“If he (Hudson-Odoi) goes in there and has a few bad games and gets an injury and tries to play with an injury because you have to do that sometimes to stay in the team, these are the things he isn’t experiencing,” Hoddle told BT Sport.
“He has got the ability but he isn’t going to have an amazing game every game, but to be a top player you need to get through those things and have the mentality as well.
“As a young boy you want to be playing football. He may not be better than [Eden] Hazard, Pedro and Willian at the moment but he needs to be playing more and so does Loftus-Cheek.
“I don’t see why Loftus-Cheek is not playing as much because of [Mateo] Kovacic. I don’t see what he does for Chelsea, Loftus-Cheek should be given a chance and Ross Barkley should be playing ahead of him as well.
“He’s played 37 games this season and he hasn’t scored a goal. I haven’t seen him create anything either. This is a classic example of foreign players stopping English players coming through.”
