Chelsea defender David Luiz has proposed to his long-time girlfriend Sara Madeira with an extravagant fireworks and lights on display.
The 31-year-old Brazilian met the 28-year-old Portuguese dentist during his time at Benfica as a teenager, and went down on one knee to ask Madeira to marry him.
Madeira said yes on the clip shared to Instagram by video-sharing app Otro, who captioned the post: ‘We hear wedding bells! Congrats guys!’
The Brazilian was left out of Brazil’s squad for their friendlies against Panama and the Czech Republic and will have enough time to spend with his fiancée during the international break.
Luiz was in attendance at Kingsmeadow on Thursday to watch Chelsea Women beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.
Luiz turns 32 next month, and Chelsea’s policy for players over 30 has been the only stumbling block to his contract extension as the club only offers 12 month extensions and Luiz wanted longer than that.
However, that seems to have been sorted out as Luiz has reassured Chelsea fans that he is close to agreeing a new contract with the club.
When asked if he will still be at Stamford Bridge next season, Luiz said: “I think so. We are talking with the club. Everybody knows I love this club, I feel comfortable here and am happy here. I am doing my job very well so I think a lot is going to happen.
“I have the job best job in the world so I have to be motivated every single day. I love football, if I didn’t love football I would not be playing anymore.”
