Past Chelsea squads have often boasted of many good free-kick takers. We’ve seen the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Alex, Michael Ballack Raul Meireles etc stun us with some good kicks over the years.
However, this current Chelsea team don’t really have good free-kick takers. Willian seems to be our number one free-kick taker, and the Brazilian scored a beauty last time out in the Europa League game against Dynamo Kiev. Marcos Alonso tends to take kicks from the left side and he can curl in the ball into the net with his left foot.
Other than Willian and Alonso, Chelsea haven’t really had it good with free-kicks. David Luiz seemed to have lost his magic touch, and Eden Hazard’s shot tends to hit the wall.
But Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi has revealed that there are a number of good free-kick takers we aren’t aware of who are doing really well in training.
Hudson-Odoi admitted that he’s a good free-kick taker, and also revealed that Emerson Palmieri and Mateo Kovacic are good in free-kicks as well.
He told the official Chelsea website in the column Lifting The Lid: “Maybe myself, I’ve taken a couple and done well with them. But Emerson as well, he has great technique. I’d also say Kovacic, I’ve seen him bend them around the wall into the top corner.”
Hudson-Odoi also admitted that himself and Antonio Rudiger are usually the loudest in the dressing room. He said: “Me and Toni. He’s always dancing in the changing room and really lively. I also like to have a laugh and joke as well.”
He then took a stroke at Willian by revealing that the Brazilian is the most active on social media as well as Jorginho.
Every team needs a leader that can raise the heads in the dressing room when the chips are down, and Hudson-Odoi points to Antonio Rudiger, David Luiz, Willy Caballero and Olivier Giroud as the men for the job.
He said: “We have a lot of players who do that: Rudi, David, sometimes Olivier. Willy Caballero as well. He tries to bring spirits back up.”
