David Luiz is one of the players whose future at Stamford Bridge is in doubt as his contract draws close to its end.
The 31-year-old fell out of favour under former boss Antonio Conte, but he has been a key player for Maurizio Sarri. Luiz has started 34 games for the Blues, missing just two of their Premier League matches all season, highlighting how important he is for the Italian.
Luiz turns 32 next month, and Chelsea’s policy for players over 30 has been the only stumbling block to his contract extension as the club only offers 12 month extensions and Luiz wanted longer than that.
However, that seems to have been sorted out as Luiz has reassured Chelsea fans that he is close to agreeing a new contract with the club.
When asked if he will still be at Stamford Bridge next season, Luiz said: “I think so. We are talking with the club. Everybody knows I love this club, I feel comfortable here and am happy here. I am doing my job very well so I think a lot is going to happen.
“I have the job best job in the world so I have to be motivated every single day. I love football, if I didn’t love football I would not be playing anymore.”
Luiz has shown his quality on the ball often this season with so many over the top passes that has found teammates like Pedro, Willian, Gonzalo Higuain and even N’Golo Kante.
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has hailed Chelsea defender David Luiz as the best ball-playing centre back in the Premier League.
Despite admitting that Luiz does have his defensive deficiencies, Hargreaves believes the Brazilian suits Sarri’s style of play.
“He’s perfect for Maurizio Sarri,” Hargreaves said.
“He’s probably the best passer of the ball in the centre-back position in the whole Premier League, that’s what he gives you.
“For a team that dominates possession, he’s perfect.
“I think the issue we’ve had at times in his career I think has been defensively.”
