Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata on loan to Atletico Madrid suffered another embarrassing miss as Atletico slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao.
Morata spurned a late chance from a corner that could have helped Atletico get back into the game as Second-half goals from Inaki Williams and Kenan Kodro sealed the victory for Bilbao and put a major dent in Atletico’s La Liga title hopes.
A corner was flicked on late in the game, and an unmarked Morata was at the back post but the Spaniard made contact as the ball was rising and his effort flew over the bar.
Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin was unhappy with Morata following his performance in their 3-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League, and Godin won’t be too happy with Morata’s miss late on in the loss to Bilbao as he failed to find the net from two yards out.
Morata’s decision to leave Chelsea forced the Blues to sign Argentine football star Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Juventus as he cut short his loan spell with AC Milan.
He had scored nine goals in 24 appearances for the Blues this season but failed to hit the heights expected of him at Stamford Bridge under new manager Maurizio Sarri. He then decided to return to boyhood club Atletico Madrid.
Sarri revealed at the time: ”Morata is potentially a very good player. He has the characteristics for playing in my team, but one month ago he said he wanted to play for another team.
”It was very difficult for him to give us 100 per cent because of his mental situation. He is very suitable for my football, but the situation has changed in the last month, so we needed to change.
”In the January market it is very difficult to get a very good striker. Gonzalo was in a situation we could try to get him, so we decided to try.”
