Mateo Kovacic is currently on a season-long loan deal at Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid. He joined Chelsea on loan as part of the deal that saw Thibaut Courtois leave Chelsea for Real Madrid last summer.
Kovacic has revealed this season that he would love to stay at Chelsea after his loan deal expires this summer and it seems he might get his wish.
According to Metro UK, Chelsea will be allowed to sign Mateo Kovacic permanently this summer with the midfielder not in Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane’s first-team plans.
Despite wanting to overhaul Real Madrid’s midfield this summer, Zidane is happy to let the Croatian international leave permanently for Chelsea.
Zidane never really fancied Kovacic while he managed Kovacic at Real Madrid and Kovacic admitted when he joined Chelsea that he needed a manager who would show more faith in him and give him confidence.
Despite being given a bigger role he has craved for at Chelsea, Kovacic hasn’t really shown why Chelsea should sign him permanently during the summer. He has only assisted two goals in 39 appearances for Chelsea this season and is yet to score a goal.
While Zidane is happy to let Kovacic join Chelsea permanently, the Frenchman is keen on signing Chelsea stars Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante this summer.
