Jorginho moved to Chelsea from Napoli during the summer for over £50m as Maurizio Sarri insisted on bringing the Italian along with him from his former club.

Jorginho is seen as central to Sarri’s style of play, but he has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League as opposition has found how to play against the 27-year-old.

Jorginho was subject to boos from Chelsea fans when he came on as a substitute in the game against Malmo, with fans angry with his recent performances especially against Bournemouth and Manchester City.

Jorginho is yet to get an assist this season despite the number of passes he makes per game and has been criticised even by the media, but Blues defender Antonio Rudiger has come to his defence, telling fans to be patient with him.

Rudiger also told Jorginho to use the gym more so he can adapt to the physical nature of the Premier League.

“People need to give Jorginho a bit of time,” Rudiger told the Mirror.

“He came from a different league and is probably not used to this hard game. ‘Maybe he should do a bit more in the gym!”

Before the game against Fulham, Jorginho vowed to win back the heart of the fans as he told ESPN Brazil when asked whether he had heard the jeers at the time: “Of course, in this day and age everything reaches you quickly. With technology everything is very fast.

“The important thing is to know how to deal with the situation. I remained calm because I know this is what fans are like, if you’re not winning they will complain and they have the right to do so.

“But I always stay focused and keep working. And I’m sure I’ll be able to show what I’m capable of and make them change their minds.”

Jorginho backed up his promise by actually scoring a goal which was the winner against the Cottagers, and it was his first goal from open play for Chelsea.

Maurizio Sarri was full of praise for the midfielder at the end of the game and was delighted that he could find the net.

Sarri said: “I’m very happy for him. He scored, but my opinion of Jorginho is the same. He is a great player, one of the best in Europe in that position. For him it’s not easy the first season in a new team. Today he was very tired in the last part of the match. We were lucky Kovacic entered very well on the pitch.

“In that position we had some problems. We are trying during training with Kovacic and his answer was very good.”
