Olivier Giroud scored a hat-trick as Chelsea beat Dynamo Kiev 5-0 in Ukraine on Thursday night to progress to the quarter finals of the Europa League. The Blues won the tie 8-0 on aggregate.
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri rated Giroud’s performance against Dynamo Kiev as very, very good.
“Very, very good,” Sarri said of Giroud’s performance.
“But, in the last period, every time he has been on the pitch, he was able to play really very well. He’s scored nine goals in this competition.
“As you know very well, Olivier for us is a very important player. I’m really very happy for him, and am really very happy with him.”
Giroud is the Europa League’s top scorer with nine goals after his hat-trick against Dynamo Kiev.
Sarri complained about the condition of the pitch at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev following the win against Dynamo Kiev. According to Sarri, the pitch makes it difficult to play good football.
Sarri added: “I was disappointed with the condition of the pitch, but for both teams. Not only for us.
“It was not in good condition. It was a problem for us, but also a big problem for Dynamo.
“The pitch is a problem if you want to play a very good match for both teams. We had to play on this pitch, and so we played. But I remember this pitch in wonderful condition two years ago.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has admitted he wants to avoid his former side Napoli in the quarter finals of the Europa League.
Asked if he would want to play Napoli in the quarter finals, Sarri said: “I prefer to face them in the final.
“First of all, because it means we are in the final and I am happy with that. And second, it means that Naples are in the final, and I am happy.
“You know very well my relationship with the city, with the people. So, for me, it will be very difficult to play against them in Naples.”
Napoli progressed into the quarter finals of the Europa League despite a 3-1 defeat to FC Red Bull Salzburg after winning the first leg 3-0 in Italy.
