Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is undisputed right-back at the club with Davide Zappacosta his deputy.

However, reports claim Azpilicueta might have his position under threat next season as Chelsea are looking to promote youngster Reece James to the senior squad to challenge Azpilicueta next season..

The 19-year-old has impressed during his loan spell at Wigan Athletic this season and has made 38 appearances for the Championship club.

Azpilicueta has been very impressive in the Championship and is earning massive interest from Premier League clubs. The 19-year-old was voted into the Championship Team of the Season due to his form for Wigan.

Reece James is also part of England’s Under-20s squad, and he has admitted he is hoping to get a chance to play for Chelsea – a club he has supported since he was a kid.

“It’s a great feeling to play week in, week out in a good league and to play on the international stage as well,” he told Wigan Today.

“My ambition is to play for Chelsea, and every day I work hard to get there.

“I was a fan as a kid…my heroes growing up were [Frank] Lampard, [John] Terry and [Didier] Drogba. Sooner or later, hopefully I get chance.”

Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has told the fans that the players will keep working hard to win back their support as the fans chanted against Maurizio Sarri in the game against Cardiff on Sunday.

Azpilicueta said: “We have to give the fans what they expect and the bad moments are when we all need to be together.

“We are not happy with the way we are playing and we have lost a lot of points, especially away from home.

“We are all in the same boat and will push in the same direction.

“I know the fans want us to win, and when the results are not there, we are all responsible.

“They showed their thoughts but our job is to keep working hard.”
