Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has beaten Chelsea’s Eden Hazard to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, according to reports.
The Netherlands international was on a six-man shortlist which also included Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva.
Van Dijk and Sterling were the two favourites for the award, but Eden Hazard was also in the mix after another good season for the Blues.
And according to the Daily Mail, the £75 million defender has won the race to win the trophy and the result will be officially announced on Thursday.
Van Dijk will be the first defender to win the trophy since former Chelsea captain John Terry in 2005. Mohamed Salah was the winner last year, while Hazard won it in 2015.
Hazard is enjoying his best individual season at Chelsea, and having been shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award, it takes his total number of nominations to five.
Hazard’s PFA 5th PFA Player of the Year nomination means he has more PFA Player of the Year nominations that Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard.
The only two players who have been shortlisted more often since 2000 are Thierry Henry and Steven Gerrard.
Hazard has been directly involved in 28 goals – 16 goals & 13 assists – this season, more than any player in English top flight so far.
