Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been forced to change his role this season with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri preferring to play summer signing Jorginho as the anchor in Chelsea’s midfield. Kante has been played in advanced position in the right of Chelsea’s midfield.
According to Chelsea boss Sarri, Kante’s inability to play one touch football is the reason why he can’t play Jorginho’s role.
Sarri also revealed Kante’s adaptability unlike Danny Drinkwater, is the reason why the France international is still in the Chelsea team.
Explaining his use of both Kante and the England international, who was charged with a drink driving offence earlier this week, Sarri said: “He’s (Drinkwater) not adaptable, that is my opinion.
“My opinion is important for me. Kante can play with two midfielders because he is a world champion. With the three he is better on the centre right or left because I want a technical player.
“Jorginho against Brighton played 161 balls, for our way of football it’s important to have a CM and technical and fast with the mind.
“Kante is wonderful for something different but not playing one touch.”
Meanwhile, Kante has previously insisted he can as well play the Jorginho role, but is also enjoying his time in his advanced midfield role. According to Kante, he will play anywhere the manager wants him to play.
“It is something possible (to play Jorginho’s role), but the manager decides,” Kante said in February.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I like this [more advanced] position. Prefer it? It depends on the game, but I enjoy it. I’m with the manager, and I’m enjoying the way I’m playing now.
“It is a position I used to play when I was in France. I’m enjoying participating more in the offensive positions to change the game. I am enjoying it.”
