Chelsea’s resolve to keep Marcos Alonso will be tested this summer after Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone made the left-back his primary transfer target.
With Lucas Hernandez, Diego Godin, Juanfran and Filipe Luis all set to leave the Spanish club this summer, making defensive reinforcements is now top priority for Atletico Madrid.
Luis, who spent one season at Stamford Bridge, will leave Atletico Madrid this summer when his contract expires and according to Spanish media outlet AS, Alonso is Simeone’s first choice to replace Luis.
Alonso, 28, joined Chelsea in a £24million move from Fiorentina in 2016 and the Spaniard has enjoyed a successful period in English football, winning the Premier League in his debut season, the FA Cup in his second and could win the Europa League this season, with Chelsea set to play the Europa League final against Arsenal on May 29.
Since arriving from Fiorentina, Alonso has been Chelsea’s first choice at left-back but his first-team place has been less secure of late with Emerson Palmieri starting in nine of Chelsea’s last 17 matches in all competitions.
Simeone is reportedly hopeful the good relationship between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid will help seal the deal. Luis, Diego Costa, and Alvaro Morata have made the switch from West London to Madrid in recent years.
Chelsea may be reluctant to let Alonso leave due to the transfer ban imposed on the club by FIFA.
This season, Alonso has made 37 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, scoring four goals and registering five assists.
