Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia is reportedly planning to hold contract talks with Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to The Sun.
The 23-year-old midfielder is under contract until June 2021 and according to The Sun, Chelsea are keen to avoid the situation the club finds itself in with fellow academy product Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has little over 12 months left on his contract but is in no rush to sign a new one.
Loftus-Cheek was one of the best players on the pitch during Chelsea’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night.
Loftus-Cheek has excelled throughout Chelsea’s Europa League campaign, providing three goals and three assists in 10 games. He has also chipped in with five goals and two assists in five Premier League starts and 17 substitute appearances this season.
Loftus-Cheek struggled to make the bench in the beginning of the season under Maurizio Sarri but his importance to Sarri has grown over the last few months, despite just five Premier League starts all season.
The 23-year-old has struggled with a back injury this season and Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta insists Loftus-Cheek will be a Blues superstar if he remains fit.
Azpilicueta said: “I have told him a lot of times that he needed to be fit. For a long time with Chelsea he wasn’t able to play and to train for a few weeks in a row.
“He’s come from Crystal Palace after having a good loan there. He came to Chelsea after the World Cup and the manager trusted him, but due to a few back problems he couldn’t get the rhythm of being involved in the team every week.
“But since he has been doing this, we have seen an improvement, his confidence in space is very good. He is very strong.
“He is a good attacking midfielder that can attack the box and score goals. I’m sure the only way he can go is up.”
