Chelsea have been urged to reject Barcelona’s advances for Willian because the Brazilian is a key player Chelsea need to keep hold of after Eden Hazard left for Real Madrid this summer.
That’s according to Sky Sports reporter David Reed.
“I don’t think they’ve really replaced Diego Costa since he left,” Reed said on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast.
“Alvaro Morata didn’t work out, Gonzalo Higuain didn’t really work out. He’s almost come to the Premier League a couple of years to late.
“Eden Hazard is the big loss. His goals, his goals involvement, his assists for Chelsea through the roof – not just last season but over the past few seasons since he’s been there – and he is gonna be the big miss.
“Obviously they’ve already signed Christian Pulisic, who has been doing well for the United States over at the Gold Cup. Whether he is able to fill those shoes is a different matter.
“In terms of injuries, Callum Hudson-Odoi, we know he’s working to get back to full fitness.
“But that’s a really difficult injury to come back from that Achilles one, and he may not arrive back to full fitness and get into full flow until October/November. It’s whether they can see through that time.
“There’s also gonna be clubs interested in Willian. We know that Barcelona have had bids rejected for him, Atletico Madrid were interested in him.
“He’s a key player that they need to keep hold of and I think they will with this transfer ban hanging over them.
“And then the other issue facing them is the young players. Does [Lampard] blood them straight away? Is he bold and put them straight in from the start? Or does he drip feed them in and rely on those experienced players that Chelsea have had over the last few years?”
