Chelsea youngster Reece James was stretchered off in great pain while playing against Chile at the Toulon Tournament in France.

Reece James needed oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off in England’s U20s clash against Chile. James suffered a suspected broken ankle and is set to miss the start of the new season for Chelsea.

The 19-year-old Chelsea academy product needed oxygen, but was conscious when being stretchered off, with England chasing their first win in Group A.

It was first feared that James suffered a broken ankle in that game, but tests have now confirmed that the defender suffered a heavy sprain to ankle ligaments.

James is returning to England and will report to Chelsea on Sunday for further medical tests, which will reveal the full extent of his injury and how long he will be sidelined for. The grade of the ankle sprain will determine his rehabilitation time.

James had a successful campaign on loan last term and was ever-present in Wigan’s starting XI, making 46 appearances and scoring three goals as they finished 18th in the league.

The 19-year-old right-back was named Wigan’s Player of the Year and was also selected in the EFL Team of the Year.

Reece James is being tipped to be a big star in future and there are calls for him to make the Chelsea first team next season.

James admitted at the end of the season that he is hoping to get a chance to play for Chelsea – a club he has supported since he was a kid.

“It’s a great feeling to play week in, week out in a good league and to play on the international stage as well,” he told Wigan Today.

“My ambition is to play for Chelsea, and every day I work hard to get there.

“I was a fan as a kid…my heroes growing up were [Frank] Lampard, [John] Terry and [Didier] Drogba. Sooner or later, hopefully I get chance.”

The 19-year-old impressed during his loan spell at Wigan Athletic last season and made 38 appearances for the Championship club. He is being seen as competition for Cesar Azpilicueta for the right-back spot in the near future.
