Maurizio Sarri’s departure to Juventus has left a vacant job in the Chelsea managerial seat, and it has left open the door for club legend Frank Lampard to return to Stamford Bridge.

Just after a year as Chelsea boss, Sarri decided to call it quits and return to Italy, and Lampard is the favoured one to replace Sarri after an impressive first year in management in which he guided Derby to the playoffs before losing to Aston Villa in the final.

According to reports, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is impressed with Lampard’s performance at Derby especially the faith he placed on youngsters and believes Chelsea youngsters will get a chance under Lampard.

Sky Sports pundit and Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier believes now is the best time for Chelsea to make Lampard manager and that the Chelsea legend will find it impossible to turn down the job.

“I think this has fallen at the right time for Frank and he does look like the right fit for the job,” Le Tissier said.

“Only time will tell [if it’s too early for Lampard].

“Frank has got a huge knowledge of the game from all his years of playing it.

“I think last season would have been a very steep learning curve with what went on in the Championship.

“He managed to guide Derby into the play-offs, they didn’t quite get there.

“I think it is just an impossible one to turn down.

“Given Frank’s history at that club and the chance to manage it, I don’t think you can then take a chance of maybe another two or three seasons in the Championship, perhaps things not going great and all of a sudden you have a bad run as a manager and you get sacked from Derby.

“Is that chance of managing Chelsea ever going to come up again after that?

“I think it is impossible for him to turn it down if it does get offered to him.”
