Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic was in amazing form as the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago in the Gold Cup.
The US men were far from their best in the first-half and couldn’t find a way past Trinidad as the first-half ended goalless, but it was a different ball game in the second period as the United States going on a rampage with Pulisic calling the shots.
Pulisic settled into the game in the second half, and his movement and quickness was too much for the Trinidadians to handle. He set up a pair of goals and contributed a goal of his own to propel the Americans to their biggest-ever victory in the Gold Cup history – a massive 6-0 win.
Trinidad and Tobago coach Dennis Lawrence was full of praise for Pulisic after the game and admitted that Chelsea got a handful in the signing of the young American.
“That’s why Chelsea paid $60 million for him,” Trinidad and Tobago coach Dennis Lawrence said. “Because we kept him quiet for 65 minutes and then he found a way.”
The Americans head into their group finale against Panama on Friday with momentum, having gotten 6 points from 2 games, with 4-0 and 6-0 victories over Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.
Pulisic was impressed with his side’s performance and hailed their display after the massive victory.
“We wanted to put them under pressure the whole game and we knew that if we did that, and moved the ball quickly, we would wear them out,” said Pulisic. “They were very man oriented and it was tough to break the lines, but we just said you have to keep moving and finding the right spaces and in the end we did a good job of that in the second half.
“Obviously when you continue to do that the whole game, and you press them every time you lose the ball, it’s tough for them and they got tired,” Pulisic said. “You could see that, and we did that really well tonight.”
