With Maurizio Sarri close to a Chelsea exit after just one year at the club, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is being linked with the Blues job, and is currently the favourite to land the job.
Despite guiding Chelsea to a third place finish and Europa League success, Sarri is set to become Juventus manager after both clubs reached an agreement on a compensation package on Thursday night.
According to reports, Lampard has asked another Chelsea legend Didier Drogba to join him at Chelsea as he prepares to take over from Sarri as manager. Lampard has only been a manager for a year as he took charge of Derby County last season. His Derby team were beaten by Aston Villa in the Championship play-off finals but he has done enough to convince Chelsea chiefs he is ready to step up to the big time.
Former Chelsea player and academy coach Jody Morris who worked with Lampard at Derby County, will arrive with him as assistant, while Drogba – who he won the Champions League with – could take on the role as a striker coach, according to The Sun.
However, there might be no place for Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola who served as Sarri’s assistant last season.
Drogba believes that Lampard has what it takes to succeed at Chelsea regardless of his lack of managerial experience.
“I think it is a very good option for the club,” Drogba said, according to Standard Sport. “He has done well with Derby, taking the team to the play-off final.”
“So he is never going to be ready, then? Does he have to wait until he is 50 to be ready?” the Ivorian replied when asked about his inexperience.
“I think it depends on your experience and depends on your desire to succeed and do it.
“If he feels ready I don’t think it is too early.”
Great collaboration super Frank! We need our legend to help our dear club. Wish you guys all the best for the season!
Frank has proven everything it takes to be a leader and a coach; the passion he showed throughout both on and off the pitch during his days in the blue shirt. For Drogba, he’s a legendary striker and I see lot of positive things happening on Stamford bridge this season.
