A record breaking 1,072 goals were scored in the Premier League last season but the Premier League are looking to increase that number for 2019-20 with a brand new ball.
The Premier League has unveiled the new Nike Merlin ball for next season and it features technology which they say will result in more goals next season.
The Nike Merlin, which will be used exclusively in the Premier League, is the first bespoke ball of its kind and has been produced to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the Premier League and Nike.
Nike implemented Aerowtrack grooves on the ball which will ensure a more consistent flight through the air.
The ball will also have Urban Grip, which Nike say gives enhanced traction on any surface and in any weather conditions.
The Merlin ball comprises just four fuse-welded panels to provide a bigger sweet spot for ball striking.
“The Premier League is often described as the most dynamic league in the world and we wanted to create a ball that reflects this,” said Kieran Ronan, GM, Global Equipment at Nike.
“We wanted to design a ball that specifically illustrated the traits of Premier League football,’ said Ronan.
“A ball that felt hyper-technical and precise in nature but also inspired by this English culture of living and breathing Premier League football.”
