34 Chelsea players are currently in Dublin, Ireland, for a preseason training camp.
According to football.london, these five players need to make a big impression on Frank Lampard in Dublin:
1. Kurt Zouma
The France international spent the last two seasons away on loan, first at Stoke City and then at Everton. He impressed during both loan spells.
With Gary Cahill leaving Chelsea this summer, football.london see a chance for Zouma in the first team in the new season.
“Gary Cahill’s exit means that the Blues are one short at the back at present and the Frenchman may be the man to take his place,” according to football.london.
Everton want to sign Zouma on a permanent deal after impressing while on loan with them but football.london believes “a good pre-season and Zouma may well remain at Stamford Bridge next season.”
2. Danny Drinkwater
The central midfielder failed to play a competitive game for Chelsea last season under Maurizio Sarri. He made just one appearance for Chelsea all season, the Community Shield loss to Manchester City at the start of August.
Football.london believes Drinkwater may have a chance under Lampard as he tends to use two central midfielders in his team.
“Lampard tended to use two central midfielders last season at Derby and that could well open the door for Drinkwater to come in and make an impression,” according to football.london.
“However, it is going to be hard with the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Tiemoue Bakayoko just some of the players he has to contend with.”
3. Tiemoue Bakayoko
Antonio Conte signed the midfielder from Monaco for £40million but he struggled in his first season at the club. After a rocky start on loan at AC Milan, Bakayoko impressed in Italy.
“Bakayoko now has the chance to get his career in west London back on track,” football.london said.
“The player proved last season how good he can be and now he just needs to do that at Chelsea.
“As is the case with Drinkwater, finding an opportunity in the starting XI will be easier said than done.”
4. Michy Batshuayi
Football.london believes the new season could be the year Batshuayi is given a proper run in the team.
The Belgian striker has spent the last 18 months away on loan due to lack of playing time in the team.
Alvaro Morata’s exit to Atletico Madrid and Chelsea’s decision not to sign Gonzalo Higuain on a permanent deal means Chelsea boss Frank Lampard must work with Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham.
According to football.london, this is Batshuayi’s best chance to get a proper run at Chelsea.
“Batshuayi is going to have to take his chance at Chelsea sooner rather than later or he could find himself playing away from Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis,” according to football.london.
5. Davide Zappacosta
The Italian has been backup to Cesar Azpilicueta in the right-back position at the club but football.london believes Reece James’ impressive loan spell at Wigan last season has made it difficult for the Italian.
“Reece James’ return from his loan spell at Wigan Athletic means it won’t just be between Zappacosta and Cesar Azpilicueta for the right-back position next season,” according to football.london.
“The fact that James is now a contender to play in the first team means that the Italian really needs to hit the ground running in pre-season and catch Lampard’s eye.”
