Marcos Alonso endured a poor campaign under Maurizio Sarri last season and would be hoping to have a better season under new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.
The Spaniard came under heavy criticism from Chelsea fans last season as he lost his place at left-back to Emerson towards the end of last season. Sarri even preferred Emerson to Alonso for Chelsea’s Europa League final victory over Arsenal.
Alonso has revealed Lampard has given his full-backs freedom to bombard down the Blues’ flanks and Alonso admits he feels very good playing the way Lampard wants his full-backs to play.
“The first few sessions have been going very well,” Alonso told Sky Sports.
“I feel very good playing the way the manager wants with high intensity, trying to keep the ball, moving the ball side to side and giving freedom for the full-backs to attack.
“Of course, knowing that our main target is to defend but I’m very happy with how we’re working and looking forward to the start of the season.”
Alonso is in contention to play in Chelsea’s pre-season clash with Barcelona on Tuesday as preparation for the new season intensifies.
Lampard will be hoping for a win over Barcelona after a draw against Bohemians, a 4-0 victory over St Patrick’s and a 1-0 loss to Japanese champions Kawasaki Frontale.
