The Blues have arrived safely in Japan ahead of friendly games against Kawasaki Frontale and Barcelona.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard selected a 24-man travelling party, with American international Christian Pulisic expected to join up with the Blues in Japan a little later today.
Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, who didn’t feature in any of the pre-season games in Dublin due to injury, is expected to be part of team training in Japan and could feature in any of the two games.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is another Blue who didn’t feature in either of the two games in Ireland, with Willy Caballero and Jamie Cumming used between the sticks, but the Spanish stopper is expected to be involved in our games against J-League champions Kawasaki Frontale and Barcelona.
The Chelsea squad that arrived in Japan:
Goalkeepers: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Willy Caballero, Jamie Cumming.
Defenders: Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Davide Zappacosta, Kurt Zouma, Marcos Alonso, Andreas Christensen, Emerson, Fikayo Tomori.
Midfielders: N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Ross Barkley, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount.
Forwards: Michy Batshuayi, Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham, Kasey Palmer, Kenedy, Pedro
Pulisic – to join up shortly.
Meanwhile, Lampard has been impressed by the attitude of Pulisic after the American refused to take an extended break to join the team in Japan.
Lampard said: “Christian joins us on Tuesday.
“He’s had a short break, but he wanted to get back with us quickly, which I certainly appreciate.”
“I appreciate that [coming straight off the Gold Cup],” Lampard added. “It’s how I would have been.
“It’s a big move for him to a huge club. He’s a top young player. He’s only going to go one way in terms of his career – he’s going to go up and be a big signing for Chelsea. I hope so. I look forward to working with him.
“It’s important we start the season as well as we can. I know we have injuries – people back at Cobham now that are influential players for us at similar positions, so we’ll need him.”
