Chelsea have finally confirmed the signing of Mateo Kovacic on a permanent deal from Real Madrid.
Kovacic joined Chelsea on loan last season from the Los Blancos and helped the club win the Europa League and end the season as third in the league under Maurizio Sarri. Kovacic was a key part of Sarri’s team, and will stay at Chelsea beyond the concluded season as the Blues have finally made the signing permanent.
Kovacic signed a five-year contract and he said afterwards: “I really enjoyed my season on loan with Chelsea, I feel comfortable at the club and like London and the Premier League very much. I am very happy to be able to join permanently.
“We had a successful year, winning the Europa League and I hope I can make a big contribution in the coming seasons.”
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “Mateo proved what an accomplished player he is during his season on loan with us and we are delighted to welcome him to the club on a permanent basis.
“He already possesses extensive experience at club and international level and we are sure he will be a big success with Chelsea over the next five years.”
With Chelsea hit with a transfer ban, this will be a good signing for the club as the Blues will be unable to sign players for two transfer windows.
Kovacic made 51 appearances for Chelsea last season and started in 36 of those games.
