Chelsea ended our tour of Japan on the high with a 2-1 victory over Spanish champions Barcelona on Tuesday.
Chelsea defender David Luiz started the game against Barcelona alongside Andreas Christensen in central defence and both players impressed against Barcelona.
Luiz has revealed he enjoyed Chelsea’s win over Barcelona because we played with intensity, and with a lot of possession.
“Both teams played very well,” Luiz said, according to Chelsea’s official website.
“I was happy with my team because we played with intensity, and with a lot of possession also. Against Barcelona it’s always difficult to keep possession but we did it, and we could have scored more goals.
“It is a great moment of pre-season. We are still improving, we are still going in the right way, and these two games [in Japan] gave us a lot of things that will help us.”
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has demanded his players move the ball quickly and purposefully, and the benefits of that approach were seen in Tuesday’s victory over Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Lampard was impressed with the performance of Kovacic against Barcelona.
“I thought he was outstanding in the first half. I really liked Kovacic last season, I watched Chelsea a lot,” Lampard said.
“I saw lots in his game I really liked and what I’ve found here on this tour from the first day he turned up is a hungry attitude, desire to work and an incredible talent on the ball and I want to work with him and help him improve.
“I think there’s so much talent there and I really like him. I’m really pleased, we know we’ve got numbers in midfield areas but I can’t help but be excited by some of the elements in his performance today and I think there’s even more to come.”
