Essien wrote: “Proud to see you coming back home Frank Lampard, Good luck and all the best Chelsea .Come On Blues”

Drogba and Essien were joined by another of Lampard’s old Chelsea team-mates, Mario Melchiot, in wishing the new boss well, as the former Holland full-back tweeted: “Welcome back Frank!”

Meanwhile, Lampard has admitted he is proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach.

“I am immensely proud to be returning to Chelsea as head coach,” Lampard said.

“Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we have shared, however, my sole focus is on the job in hand and preparing for the season ahead. I am here to work hard, bring further success to the club and I cannot wait to get started.”
