Derby County will begin pre-season training on Monday today, but Blues legend Frank Lampard will not be there as their manager.
Just last week, Derby confirmed that they’ve given Chelsea the permission to discuss with their manager Lampard, as the Blues are keen for him to replace Maurizio Sarri as the next Chelsea manager after the Italian left for Juventus.
The Rams said in a statement on their official website: “Derby County Football Club can confirm that they have granted permission for Chelsea Football Club to speak to Frank Lampard about the vacant managerial position at Stamford Bridge.
“With pre-season fast approaching for both clubs it is hoped this will allow Chelsea to swiftly conclude their discussions.
“The club will make no further comment until it is appropriate to do so.”
And now, Derby County have excused Lampard from their first day of pre-season training as he edges closer to a sensational return to Chelsea.
A statement from the club read: “Derby County Football Club has excused Frank Lampard from reporting back for pre-season training on Monday and Tuesday to allow his discussions regarding a potential move to Chelsea to be concluded as soon as possible.
“The first few days of pre-season training will be focused on fitness training and will continue as planned under the guidance of the fitness, medical, conditioning and sports science teams at the club’s Training Centre.
“On the assumption that Frank will reach an agreement with Chelsea to become their new manager, the club shall step up its efforts to find a replacement manager.”
Chelsea are expected to confirm the appointment of Frank Lampard as the new Blues boss before the start of pre-season, and reports suggest that it will be done before the end of the week.
