Chelsea paid Napoli over £50m to sign Jorginho, as the central midfielder was key to Maurizio Sarri’s style of play. Sarri needed a deep lying playmaker that could pass the ball out from deep and retain possession.
For Sarri-ball, Jorginho’s role was so important that he had to move N’Golo Kante higher up the pitch. Kante is hailed as the best defensive midfielder in the world, but he played in an advanced midfield role for Sarri.
That is now bygone, as Chelsea have signed a new manager in Frank Lampard, and the Blues legend is expected to stamp his philosophy on the team, and for Lampard, he loves to have a good mix with keeping the ball and releasing the ball quickly. Lampard is a manager that loves to see his side advance quickly to attack, and one can see why his side was one of the highest scoring side in the Championship last season.
With Sarri now gone, do Lampard have a plan for Jorginho? Will Jorginho’s football fit Lampard’s style of play?
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes Lampard has a big problem to solve with how to use Jorginho next season, revealing that playing him beside Kante deep in midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation will be the best bet.
“I think Frank will go with a 4-2-3-1,” Nicol said on ESPN FC.
“The problem that Frank is going to have is the three.
“Are the two wide guys in the three going to defend? Because if they’re not going to defend, then you’re in trouble.
“Jorginho, yes can play off a Kante in that defensive role, but he’s not a real defender.
“They need to have two guys in that three that are willing to sit a little deeper and do some defending. Otherwise it’s not going to work.
“A lot of the talk is been how Frank’s going to play.
“But there’s one thing right now, he can’t play 4-4-2 because he doesn’t have two forwards that know how to play in that sort of formation.
“So that means it’s either going to be the 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3.
“Jorginho, in my opinion, can’t do it in the Premier League in a 4-3-3.
“So Frank’s got a big problem to solve.”
Jorginho will fit in well beside Kante in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but he isn’t the best candidate for the job. A certain Tiemoue Bakayoko can also play that role and has qualities that are different from what Jorginho has to offer.
While Jorginho is good on the ball and has attributes like awareness, pass accuracy and he links the midfield with defence easily, he’s also a weak link defensively. But for Bakayoko, he impressed for AC Milan last season and is a bullish midfielder who can tackle, work hard and is good on the breaks. He’s more of a Lampard-esque type of player than Jorginho.
Chelsea fans may have bad memories of Bakayoko, but the Frenchman has improved on loan at Milan, and he’s being pursued by other top European clubs – this just shows how much he has improved his game.
Lampard might decide to keep Bakayoko, and the Jorginho could just be the victim of the change in style from last season. But time will tell as we all count down to the new season with Super Frankie Lampard as Chelsea boss.
