Former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri played N’Golo Kante in a more advanced role last season to accommodate Jorginho in midfield.
Fans and pundits criticised the Italian for not playing Kante in his more natural defensive midfield position but Kante has admitted his movement and positioning improved while playing in an advanced role last season under Sarri.
“I don’t know if it was my favourite goal of the season but I would say this one was important because it was quite a difficult game,” Kante told Chelsea’s official website while discussing his goal against Manchester City last season.
“I was happy to give the lead to the team, and then we managed to win the game, so I am very happy for this goal.
“The position I played gave me more opportunities to score. It was like another type of my game to improve. I think I improved my positioning and my movement in the more advanced role.
“It’s always good to score. It’s a happy feeling because it’s the main target of the game. When we help the team to come back in a game or take the lead I am always happy when we have a goal, and especially when I score.”
Should Chelsea boss Frank Lampard play Kante in his natural defensive position next season or in an advanced position like Sarri did last season?
