Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is considering letting Davide Zappacosta leave Chelsea on loan so that Chelsea youngster Reece James can be the main back-up to right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, according to Standard Sport.
Since joining from Torino for an initial £23m in 2017, the Italian right-back has made little impact at Stamford Bridge, starting just 34 matches of which only 13 have come in the Premier League.
The report claims Zappacosta has been involved in Chelsea’s pre-season under Frank Lampard partly because James is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.
Standard Sport claim Chelsea had initially earmarked Ola Aina to be the club’s second-choice right-back – behind Azpiliceuta with James leaving on loan but Aina told Chelsea he wanted to join Torino – where he played regularly last term on loan – on a permanent basis
James is highly regarded at Chelsea after impressing on loan at Wigan last season. He won all the Championship club’s player of the year awards.
If James’ recovery from his ankle injury doesn’t suffer any setback and he returns for pre-season soon as expected, Chelsea will reportedly listen to loan offers for Zappacosta.
Serie A side Lazio are reportedly interested in Zappacosta and made a move for the Italian international in January.
