One problem Chelsea had over the years have been player power. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has often been criticised for not backing the managers when they are faced with the pressure of player power.
No manager wants to be trapped with the player power dilemma, and over the years we’ve seen managers handle this tough situation which can actually be a distraction to the team.
New Chelsea boss Frank Lampard who was a part of the Chelsea core during his playing days have admitted that he is in support of player power and wants players who have strong personalities in his team.
Lampard said: “No. We had a strong dressing room which was part of the success. So I want player power in the dressing room.
“Players must have personality. I think it’s far too easy to say from the outside there aren’t personalities in the dressing room. It’s something that only when you’re in it you know.
“I haven’t been in the dressing room recently, so I’ll be very intrigued to work with the players. But I certainly wouldn’t say there isn’t player power or personality.
“When you talk about David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud – who both won the World Cup – and Willian. There’s so many there. And players show their personalities in different ways.
“You don’t have to be John Terry and Didier Drogba, who were obvious powerful personalities and players. You can have players who might look slight and have different ways about them that can be powerful.
“I want to promote that. I want the players to own it.”
