Chelsea youngster Reece James excelled on loan for Wigan last season and was named in the Championship team of the season.
Unfortunately for James, he picked up an ankle injury while representing England under-20s at the Toulon Tournament, and he’s expected to be back by September.
Crystal Palace are keen on signing up the Chelsea youngster as a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the 19-year-old is highly rated at Stamford Bridge.
Reece James will miss all of Chelsea’s pre-season, and Lampard won’t have the opportunity to assess the youngster. The Chelsea boss will now determine whether to keep the youngster or send him out on another loan deal.
According to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol, he issued an update on James on the latest episode of the Transfer Talk podcast, insisting that Lampard wants him to stay.
“As far as Reece James is concerned, we’re being told that Chelsea don’t want to sell him at all this summer,” he said.
“He’s injured at the moment, he did really well on loan at Wigan last season, and Frank Lampard wants to fully assess him before making any decision on his future.
“But we’re being told from the Chelsea end that they see him as somebody who does have a big future at Stamford Bridge, and they don’t want him to go anywhere.”
