Chelsea youngster Fikayo Tomori starred on loan at Championship club Derby last term under Frank Lampard last season and was a key part of the Derby squad.
Tomori has matured a lot on loan but may have to go on another loan spell due to the competition in Chelsea’s defence.
Currently, Lampard has five centre-backs at his disposal – Tomori, Kurt Zouma, David Luiz, Andreas Christensen and the injured Antonio Rudiger.
One of the five defenders have to leave the club or else he won’t get enough game time so that four centre-backs can fight for two places over the course of the season.
While Chelsea are playing in four competitions, including the Champions League, Tomori is in danger of only getting a handful of games as Lampard has maintained that Zouma won’t be leaving the club on loan but will remain with the Blues for next season.
A loan deal is being discussed between the Chelsea chiefs and Tomori’s representatives and so far there has been interest from clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga and Portugal’s top flight.
Speaking of the Chelsea competition and the assurances he’s gotten from the manager, Zouma said: “We had a chat and he’s been very good with me so now I just need to work very hard in pre-season and see what happens.
“Of course there’s competition here because we have a lot of players, a lot of quality and everybody is working hard, which you can see in the games and training sessions.
“The manager can put any player in the team and they will do well because we have a lot of quality here so he has to make the choice. He is very lucky because he has only good players so it’s a hard choice.”
