Chelsea legend Frank Lampard was confirmed as Maurizio Sarri’s replacement on Thursday, signing a three-year contract.
Lampard will be unable to make any new signings this summer due to the transfer ban on Chelsea so he will have to put up with what he has already got at his disposal.
Former West Ham goalkeeper and ESPN FC pundit Shaka Hislop has named the five players who will be most important for Lampard next season.
Chelsea’s five most important players according to Shaka Hislop
“Rudiger] I think has been the most consistent of Chelsea’s centre-backs,” Hislop told ESPN FC, according to Daily Express.
“I feel that he can step up into more of a leadership role and really make that back four his own. The back four needs a boss and I think Rudiger is nicely poised to be that.”
“Ruben Loftus-Cheek who in the second half of last season established himself as more of a regular under Sarri,” Hislop added.
“I thought Chelsea as a team responded. I hope he keeps a hold of his spot. As a physical presence I don’t think they come any bigger.
“I think he’s got some incredible talent about him, just needs some experience, needs minutes.”
“Just about the only striker they’ve got. Giroud has not been [an out-and-out goalscorer] for quite some time,” Hislop added.
“But he has provided good link-up play, he has provided that physical presence in the box. If he can add goals, that is huge for Chelsea.”
“[Kante is] for me, without question, the best defensive midfielder in the game, bar none,” Hislop added.
“We know his talents, we know what he can do, we know what he gives. I hope Lampard, unlike Sarri, plays him in his best position.”
“I feel that Callum Hudson-Odoi without question is the most exciting talent on Chelsea’s books,” Hislop added.
“Maybe he’s the player that becomes the focus for them in the absence of Eden Hazard.
“If he delivers on that promise, if he gets the minutes, without question Callum Hudson-Odoi can be Chelsea’s most important player next season.”
