Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been handed an injury set-back after Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante was sent back home from Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Japan after a worrying injury set back.
The France international will return to London to continue rehabilitation on the knee injury suffered ahead of the Europa League final at the end of last season.
He played the full 90 minutes as Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 in May but he has struggled with the injury since then.
Lampard brought him on tour in the hope he might play some part in a friendly against Barcelona on Tuesday and the latest news on the important midfielder will be a huge blow for the Chelsea boss.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and striker Tammy Abraham also missed the 1-0 loss to Kawasaki Frontale on Friday.
Abraham has tonsillitis and Kepa has a stomach bug.
“I’m not a doctor but it comes along with a lot of the players not sleeping since we flew here,” said Lampard.
“They’re finding it difficult in different ways and it’s come out this way in these two players. I don’t expect either of them to be too long.
“Tammy’s on the mend already. Hopefully both will be in contention for Barcelona next week.”
