Chelsea’s third pre-season game under new boss Frank Lampard didn’t come off with a victory as the Blues lost the game 1-0 to Japanese champions Kawasaki Frontale.
The game was looking set to end in a draw after 90 minutes, but substitute Leandro Damiao had other plans as he scored from a corner just after the 86th minute to win the game fon Kawasaki Frontale.
Lampard started with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Pedro, Mason Mount and Kenedy supporting Michy Batshuayi in attack, while Kurt Zouma and David Luiz were the centre-back pairing. Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho sat at the base of midfield. Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso started in the fullback position.
Chelsea could easily have won the game but Kenedy couldn’t convert his chances, and Lampard has now revealed that he’s undecided whether the Brazilian will be part of the squad next season or leave on another loan deal.
Lampard said after the game: “With Kenedy, my feeling coming into a big squad with a transfer ban, is that I need to assess the players for as long as I can in pre-season to make sure we pick the right squad.
“If Kenedy continues to show the attitude and play the way he did today he is making a great case to stay having been on loan in recent seasons. Nobody is in or out of the squad or has had a line drawn under or over them. Everybody is competing to stay in it.”
