Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw with German side Eintracht Frankfurt both home and away from home in the Europa League semifinal. Both clashes were difficult ties for the Blues but Chelsea eventually got the win through a penalty shootout.
Former Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic has now revealed that the defeat to Chelsea was his biggest regret of last season. Jovic who scored against the Blues in both legs have revealed that the Chelsea defeat really hurt him.
“My only regret is the Europa League semi-final against Chelsea,” said Real Madrid’s freshly signed Serbian, writing for Players’ Tribune, a content platform that connects athletes with fans through their personal experience.
“This is probably one of the only times in my career I cried tears of sadness, and it wasn’t even right after we lost the penalties. It was when we were walking off the pitch and I saw the Eintracht supporters in the front row singing our anthem with tears in their eyes, even though we had lost.”
Chelsea went on an unbeaten run to win the Europa League last season and the Blues set a record in the process.
Atletico Madrid had the previous record of 15 games unbeaten, which Chelsea matched after beating Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals, and surpassed after the first leg semifinal draw against Frankfurt. The Blues went unbeaten in the next two games to win the tournament as Chelsea defeated Arsenal 4-1 in the final to become Europa League champions.
